We live in a 150 year old farm house that had no smoke detectors installed in it. Since we have three kids and tons of animals, we really wanted to add some for the added fire safety. I went out to my local big box store and picked up a couple of contractor packs, 150′ of 14/3 electrical wire (needed to interconnect the smoke detectors and connect them to a circuit breaker), 25′ of 14/2 electrical wire (needed to connect the smoke detectors to power), a circuit breaker (the manufacturer recommends keeping the smoke detectors on a separate breaker), some wire nuts, a junction box (and bushings to match), and the breaker that fits my breaker box. Now, I am not a professional electrician, so only do this if you’re confident in your ability to not electrocute yourself.
It was actually pretty easy, the hardest parts I found were crawling around in my attic and mainly that was hard because of the poorly done home improvements that the previous owners had attempted (but that’s for another day).

Drill (Hitachi)
Hole Saw
150′ 14/3 Electrical Wire
